Bike Rack Review: Saris Bones 3-Bike Trunk Rack
I recently had the chance to pick up the Saris Bones 3-bike trunk rack for my Honda Civic. It’s a simple, yet aesthetically pleasing design that allows up to three bikes to come traveling with you. Overall, this rack treated me pretty well on my trip.
A bike rack can be a difficult decision to make as there are a lot to choose from. I didn’t have a hitch, and didn’t want to pay to get one installed; so I had two choices for my car. I was considering the roof rack, and will probably try a few of these someday, but was concerned that I would forget that my bike was on the roof, and drive into the garage, causing a little damage. I think a trunk rack is a pretty good decision, although it does introduce some situations that are undesireable (theft, and grime and grease from the road).
The Saris Bones is very lightweight, and felt quite strong. I wasn’t concerned at all with placing my bike on this and taking it to the north country to do some riding. I did try putting two bikes on it to see how well it would hold. The bikes were pretty close together, and over time I could see that there might be damage from either the bikes rubbing together, or the bikes rubbing on the car. If you do put multiple bikes on this rack, take care to place them well.
You will want to make sure that if you do choose this model to clean the spots where the rubber feet will touch the car or it will leave spots or scratch the paint. I would also choose another model rack if you have a dark paint on your car.
I had a difficult time setting up the straps the first time using the Saris Bones, but after that it was pretty simple to take it off, and put it back on. The straps do make it look a little less appealing once on the car, so don’t let that nice picture fool you like it did me!
This is an all around decent rack, and will work well for many folks.
