Energy Bar of the Week: Clif Nectar

Clif Bar NectarThere are very few things worse than a nasty tasting energy bar. Unfortunately, most of the energy bars that are tasty, are also pretty bad for you. They are generally loaded in saturated fats and the second ingredient is more than likely high fructose corn syrup.

Thank God for Clif Bars. You will hear me sing their praises more often than not on this blog, and for good reason. Just take a look at the ingredient list of any Clif Bar and you will understand why they are good for you. It’s always a good thing when you can pronounce every ingredient in a product. The most recent Clif Bar, the Nectar, takes ingredient simplicity to a whole new level. The average Nectar Bar (there are 4 flavors) has only 5-6 ingredients in it. Lets take a look at the ingredient list for my favorite, the cranberry, apricot, almond bar.

Ingredients: Organic Apricots, Organic Dates, Organic Roasted Almonds, Organic Cranberries, Organic Apple Juice Concentrate.

This is a perfect bar for biking. You get a decent amount of calories, much needed natural sugar, and some quality protein from the almonds. The best part of this bar is the taste. It’s a great feeling to eat something so tasty, without the guilt attached to eating an energy bar that has 5g of saturated fats. I highly recommend the Nectar, but just one disclaimer: it is nearly 2 bucks a bar, so save it for those special rides.

I completely agree. Although I’m not much of a health nut and don’t really care about the number of ingredients, these bars are awesome! I think they taste even better than the normal Cliff Bars.

[...] Just take one glance at what I call, “the energy bar aisle,” at your local bike shop and it can be very overwhelming. There are energy bars, energy jelly beans, energy drink mixes, and of course, energy gel. We have previously spotlighted a couple energy bars from both Clif and Powerbar. It is about time to look at the other side of the energy supplement, the energy gels. [...]
