CycleOps Fluid 2 TrainerWith winter quickly crawly up on us, it is time for us snow covered states to think about how we are going to stay in good biking shape over the winter. I know many die-hard Minnesotans will tough it out and throw on some hybrid tires to plow through the snow and slush, but that is not what I call fun.

I have owned a stand-up stationary bike for the last few years, but it just doesn’t have the same feel as being on my bike. Near the end of the winter season I picked up my first indoor cycling trainer, and was a bit nervous to test it out. I had been told it takes a bit of getting used to, but this was not the case. I set it up, and after a few minor adjustments, I immediately fell in love. While cycling indoors in front of the TV isn’t as enjoyable as feeling the breeze and smelling the fresh air outdoors, the trainer does provide a similar “road feel.”

The CycleOps Fluid 2 is considered by many as the cat’s pajamas of trainers. It features a huge flywheel, when compared to most trainers. This increases the inertia and is what makes it feel so road-like. Another huge advantage of the Fluid 2 is it’s weight. At 23 pounds, this thing is insanely heavy. Having a heavy trainer is really nice because it adds to the stability while you are peddling hard. Some other features include:

  • Infinite resistance curve.
  • Self-cooling mechanisms, including a patented fan design, keep the unit performing better, longer.
  • Cam-Lever tightens resistance unit with one movement.
  • Exclusive Power Band technology offers the widest resistance range without ever touching the unit.

On the negative side, there have been a few reports of the Fluid 2 leaking…well, fluid. Saris, the parent company of CycleOps claim they have fixed the few affected models of this manufacturing defect. Overall, when it comes to road-like feel, and top of the line features, the CycleOps Fluid 2 really can’t be beat. You can pick one up for right around $250 at your LBS, and that even includes a Carmichael Training Systems Time Trial DVD (not as cool as it sounds).
