New York City honored as bike-friendly U.S. city

Random BicyclesI’ve always pictured New York City to be one of the more unfriendly places to ride a bike.  The fear of getting blasted by a crazy runaway taxi comes to mind.  Apparently, I’m wrong; the League of American Bicyclists has rated it quite highly.

The nod comes as Mayor Bloomberg works to promote cycling - installing 400 to 500 bike racks a year, and setting aside 400 miles of bike lanes and paths by 2009.

Very cool, and good news indeed.   New York city has also focused on preventing, and understanding bike crashes.

It was the city’s commitment to study bike crashes and prevent them that persuaded the Washington-based bike group to bestow its bronze medal.
