Traffic lights and bicycles

Traffic LightCyclelicious has an excellent article on the technical explanation of how traffic lights are triggered and the solutions an engineer (and avid cyclist), Bob Shanteau, has suggested to make them work with cyclists.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed AB 1581 into law, which requires all new traffic actuated signals to detect bicycles and motorcycles after Caltrans adopts uniform standards, specifications and guidelines for these kinds of traffic signals.

We can only hope that the results from this research are passed on to cities around the world.

Read more about modifying the traffic signals.

Hi Justin and thanks kindly for the link. The preferred practices depends on the location and experience of traffic engineers. For example, in Colorado many cities are moving toward video detection, while these devices are not common in California.
