New study finds proper fitting bike important for more than just comfort

CyclingA new study has found that choosing the right bike, and setting it up correctly, is an important health issue for males.  The results of the research have found there is an increased risk in sexual problems that can be caused by prolonged rides on an improperly fitted bike and saddle.

A lot of the information in the study seems to be common knowledge to anyone that follows cycling, but they also found some things I had never considered being an issue.  Apparently, the pedal resistance can also contribute to health problems in the groin area if the resistance is too high.  That surprised me, but it does make sense.

Some good advice for the new cyclist:

“There is a greater incidence of numbness and erectile problems in men who cycle regularly and over longer training distances. That is why it is important to rest intermittently during prolonged and vigorous cycling.”

Their suggestions as the most important things one can do to prevent complications are somewhat obvious, such as choosing a properly fitted bike, adjusting said bike, and wearing cycling specific clothing.

This might be a good excuse to spend a little more money on a better fitting bike next time you’re out shopping for one…
