Doping ban upheld for Spain’s Iban Mayo

Iban Mayo’s doping ban has been upheld by the International Cycling Union (UCI) after additional testing was performed by the laboratory that did the original tests. Mayo was tested positive for EPO during the 2007 Tour de France.

The Spaniard was on Saunier Duval, but was kicked off the team after testing positive.   Mayo was contesting the results of the test after the B sample test was performed by a different laboratory that performed the first positive tests.

The mountain specialist, who finished the 2007 Tour in 16th place overall but was later disqualified, has said he is considering taking legal action against the UCI over the way he has been treated.

It’s a bummer that he feels he was treated poorly, but it doesn’t change the fact that he got caught cheating.

The ban will be backdated and is effective from July 31, 2007.
