Russian Olympic Cycling Team Drug Problems Continue

5 August 2008 By Tyler Cooper No Comments 73 Views

More bad news for the Russian cycling team as Vladimir Gusev is added to the list of teammates banned over drug concerns.  While Gusev hasn’t tested positive for EPO, tests show “abnormal blood values.”  The Russian cycling team is dropping like flies, as Gusev makes the fourth Russian team member to be banned from the 2008 Olympic games.  Recently, Valery Borchin, Vladimir Kanaikin, and Alexei Voevodin tested positive for the banned substance EPO.

Gusev’s place in the team will be taken by Denis Menchov who finished fourth in this year’s Tour de France. Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko called those bans unprecedented, but said avoiding scandal was more important than losing medals.
