UCI LogoThe president of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Pat McQuaid, has stated that the Spanish anti-doping officials didn’t do enough to prevent their cyclists from doping.

“I’m disgusted and annoyed that a Spanish cyclist has been the first athlete to be found positive of doping at the Olympic games,” McQuaid told The Associated Press. “I’m very angry that it is cycling that is in the headlines of the world’s media despite all of the crackdowns we have been doing.”

Maria Isabel Moreno was tested positive for the third-generation EPO (CERA) on August 8th in Beijing, and is the third Spanish cyclist to test positive for the drug.  McQuaid is expecting that Moreno will get the full two-year suspension.

The other two Spanish cyclists to get caught using EPO are Moises Dueñas Nevado, and Manuel Beltran.  Dueñas was busted prior to the 11th stage of the Tour de France, and Beltran was caught just after the first stage of the Tour.
