Wiggins leaves Garmin for new British cycling team
Bradley Wiggins, the surprise contender in the 2009 Tour de France, has made the decision to leave Team Garmin, and will join the new British cycling outfit “Team Sky”. Team Sky was announced in February of 2009, and has some lofty goals (more on this later). Â Wiggins will definitely be one of the stronger riders on this team.
From CNN.com:
Team Sky officials were delighted to add Wiggins to a roster that already features Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Russell Downing, Peter Kennaugh, Chris Froome and Steve Cummings.
Team Sky’s first major race will be at the Tour Down Under in January, but I haven’t found any confirmations if Wiggins will be at that race.
Now on to the lofty goals of Team Sky (good luck!), from their press release:
- Create the first British winner of the Tour de France, within five years.
- Inspire people of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes, through the team’s positive profile, attitude and success.
- Add further support to competitive cycling in Great Britain.
All but the first one should be simple to do, and a great benefit to all cyclers.
