Kent’s Bike Blog has an interesting discussion on an aspect of bike safety. The “suicide slot”, according to Kent, is the blind spot of a vehicle that should be avoided by a cyclist.
So I’m trying to plant the meme of the “Suicide Slot” and get more cyclists avoiding the slot. If a bike lane puts me in the suicide slot at an intersection, then I’d argue that the bike lane is wrong. Cyclelicious has an excellent article on the technical explanation of how traffic lights are triggered and the solutions an engineer (and avid cyclist), Bob Shanteau, has suggested to make them work with cyclists.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed AB 1581 into law, which requires all new traffic actuated signals to detect bicycles and motorcycles after Caltrans adopts uniform standards, specifications and guidelines for these kinds of traffic signals.
We can only hope that the results from this research are passed on to cities around the world.

The Seattlepi.com blogger, David Longdon, has created a set of 9 tips for those relationships with the cycling addict (it’s a bit of humor as well, I suppose).
Some of the things on this list of tips is a little far fetched, such as the “No skinny tires. The more rolling resistance the better”, but a few are of decent advice.
