Britain’s Cavendish wins Milan-San Remo

Mark Cavendish beat out Heinrich Haussler to win the Milan-San Remo race.  The finish was quite close, at only about half a wheel’s distance between the two, but Cavendish prevailed for his first win at the Milan-San Remo.

Lance Armstrong finished in the rear, eight minutes behind Cavendish.  Armstrong is trying to fend off a sore back, and this could have accounted for the poor finish.

Clever bicycle tube umbrella hack

Most people who lock their bikes up in a big city every day usually just remove the quick release bike seat in favor of a more permanent system in order to keep their saddle out of the hands of thieves.  Not this clever individual.  Instead of locking the seat in place, why not take it with you, and use the empty tube to hold your umbrella in case of that unexpected rain shower.

Astana among the 16 teams announced for the Tour of California

Lance Armstrong, and Alberto Contador’s team Astana will be one of the 16 teams competing in the Tour of California in 2009. Team Columbia, with George Hincapie and sprinter Mark Cavendish will also be competing, which could make things pretty interesting.  The stage race takes place on Feb. 14, and will be televised on the Versus channel.

Bike powered christmas tree

Over in Barcelona, Spain, they are taking Christmas trees to a whole new level.  As a way of promoting a cheap point to point bike rental system that went live in Barcelona last year, Bicing has set up a completely electric tree that is run by bicycles.

A black bike to a “Bright Bike” with retroreflective vinyl

Mike Mandiburg at Eyebeam wasn’t willing to settle with a simple reflector or a little blinking light on his bike. He worked on a project called “Bright Bike” that has increased the visibility of bikes by wrapping nearly the entire bike in 3M’s Scotchlite Plus Reflective 680 Series Engineering Grade Vinyl, and now the bike reflects a light (such as headlights) right back to the source.

This is a pretty amazing idea, that could see some success if they are able to figure out how …

Interstate bike route system in development

Adventure Cycling is at it again, and in a very good way.  They are working directly with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to help in the planning of an official interstate bike system.  The AASHTO Task Force was charged with developing a national corridor-level plan and designation system that transportation agencies can utilize for the development of bicycle routes.
